I have to admit that this year's Oscar was rather "fashion-friendly" with countless gorgeous gowns. Many starlets wore jaw-dropping evening numbers that were both extremely elegant and exclusively chic. I would like to start with my favorite Sandra Bullock wowed me with a deep-red strapless gown by fellow asian designer Very Wang. Its absolutely amazing hour-glass shape along with the dramatic bow, and the high-waist make the dress rank #1 in my best-dressed list. Red is a bold, attention-grabbing
color. It is hard to rock a red number, that is why my #2 also goes to the lady who rocked a red dress - Anne Hathaway. Her red carpet entrance was improved by her Valentino strapless gown. Regarding her past red carpet outings, I agree that she (or perhaps her stylist) knows how to make a statement. With this highly appealing romantic dress with floral details, she was near flawless. Keeping up with the theme of her night, "The Center of the Attention", she achieved that goal by starting her evening with a 'spot-light' dress and changed 7 more times. All her dresses were youthful, as well as sophisticated. The silver braided-tassel dress by Oscar de la Renta, the maroon silk/chiffon gown by Versace, and the futuristic electric-blue dress by Armani Prive were the three of my most favorite numbers she wore that night. I's like to give special shut-out to the always classy Ms. Cate Blanchett. Throughout the years, she proved to be one of Hollywood's most tasteful leading ladies. This time around she proved that point once again
with a very innovative Givenchy gown. This off-violet or the palest-of-purple number was a fascinating piece. Although hated by many, this dress was absolutely breath-taking with its intricate detail-work. The exact opposite of this dress was Gwyneth Paltrow's shiny-silver Calvin Klein number. The simplicity of this dress is what makes it the ultimate paradox (basically, "less is more" is the slogan for this gown). The gold accesories make the her whole look very subtle and wel-put-together. Many stars wore off or pastel colors this year, for example Nicole Kidman, Mandy Moore, and Michelle Williams. Hilary Swank, who wore a studded Gucci gown with feathers that reminded me of the old-Hollywood. Also a worthy of note was the new-comer Hailee Steinfeld's Audrey Hepburn inspired Marchesa baby-doll dress. This dress was by far the most adorable and age-appropriate gown. Last, but not least, Halle Berry makes my list with her beige studded gown (also by Marchesa). Thus, you can tell that the Oscars night was a fashion-race, with many A-list starlets flaunting their couture phenomenon. Unfortunately some starlets dressed rather poorly, or should i say peculiarly. So, this is where my worst-list starts. I was expecting Melissa Leo to wear something out of ordinary, if not glamorous. To my surprise, she wore a dress that resembled a fancy table-cloth (with all do respect). Marc Bouwer designed this one of a kind lacey number. It was a bizarre and uncanny outfit for the biggest
night in Hollywood. It was a big disappointment considering the other dresses she wore for the award season. Moving on to my next worst dresser - the newbie Jennifer Lawrence. Her gown was anything but elegant. It is absolutely unacceptable to wear a long, cotton, summer dress to the Oscars. What was she thinking when she left her house ? Was she going to a beach party? It is matter of a respect at this point. I understand she is a simple girl with a simple taste. But the Oscars is not a simple event, so one should dress accordingly. To her defense, it looked good on her (just because she is a beautiful young girl). Let's all hope she learned a lesson, and next time pull it off with a touch of designer couture and a bling-bling. My next offender is Penelope Cruz. I don't know what she was thinking when she decided to wear this dress... Very bad choice! The dress was a cheap-
looking, bedazzled mess of a dress. Many people voted for this dress as being beautiful. To those of you who did think it was a proper dress for an award ceremony - Are you out of your minds? Ms. Cruz is not particularly known for her killer-style, but she seemed to pull it of somehow. I'm guessing people are less judgmental considering her recent pregnancy. But hey, Catherine Zeta Jones was once pregnant too, and she pulled it off successfully along with her Oscars trophy (she was way bigger than Penelope Cruz!) Usually elegant Scarlet Johansson wore a deep-plum colored lacey number by Dolce & Gabbana. Although i agree that the dress is rather interesting, and a potential head-turner, it is just not a great look for Scarlet. Her make-up and hair don't help her look either. Overall, she looks unkempt and not ready. Up-do for her hair and a statement jewelry would have been a great touch, because the entire back of the dress is bare. Thank you for reading my view on this year's Oscar dresses. I think that the Oscars is the Hollywood's most anticipated night, where all the starlets can act like fairy tale princesses for one night. Why not take advantage and look your best?! With the kind of money they make, they
can afford stylists no problem. My suggestion for the repeat-offenders on the red carpet- "If you are your own stylist, fire yourself - please! And get a professional stylist... they went to school just to dress you." (In the case of any celebrity reading this right now--a celebrity looking for a stylist-- please contact me. I'd love to dress you) This has been a very fashionable award season. Thank you for those who wore absolutely amazing dresses and those who wore hideous dresses. You're the reason i have my blog :)
